Testimonials

This past year 128 volunteers traveled 130,977 miles, delivering 55,847 hot meals to the homes of older adults and taking clients to doctor appointments

13,088 calls were answered by Listening Ear from people needing help with housing, abusive situations, suicide prevention, transportation, utility assistance, prescription drug assistance, provisions for food, shelter, and clothing

Salvation Army - A family contacted our agency needing help with electricity. The husband was recently laid off and the wife was working a minimum wage job trying to support a family of five. The majority of their income went to housing, leaving little money for the electric bill. With financial support from United Way, the family was able to avoid a shut off of electric service and received referrals for employment assistance. A few weeks later we received a thank you note from the family. The husband is now employed.

Listening Ear Crisis Center- A five year old girl with developmental delays had been placed in foster care and referred for sexual abuse counseling. She had behavior problems, acted out sexually, had boundary issues, and difficulty regulating her feelings. Her foster parents were active participants in her treatment. Our program, funded by United Way, provided appropriate treatment approaches for the girl and foster parents. This has helped her to overcome her exposure to living in a home with poor boundaries and exposure to adult sexual abuse.

Mid Michigan Industries - Keith arrived at MMI with no formal work history and a very limited social network. In a short time period, Keith was able to establish himself as a member of MMI Consumer Council, which eventually lead to a position on the MMI board of directors. He also is employed by MMI as a dockhand. United Way’s financial support of our Community Connections program means so much to so many.

Friends of the Isabella Seniors - “Thank you Gold Key Drivers for getting me to and from dialysis!” United Way provides support to the Gold Key Mileage program.

Women's Aid Service - A woman came into our shelter, funded by United Way, to escape abuse and persistent stalking from her ex-husband. Two of her three children stayed with family so that she could focus on her life and work on getting it back on track. With this assistance, she was able to get a job and an apartment. She and the children are doing well and no longer living in fear.

Listening Ear Crisis Center - A woman called Listening Ear’s Crisis Line, funded by United Way. She said she had been evicted for non payment of rent and was homeless. She had been living in her car for weeks with nowhere to go. Listening Ear connected this individual with the Salvation Army, John H. Goodrow Fund, and American Red Cross Food pantry, all United Way – funded programs. These agencies were able to assist with food, shelter, and getting this woman into a stable living arrangement.
